Food and perishable products must be stored properly, at the correct temperature, and their shelf life must be monitored to ensure that foods and products are suitably fresh, edible and useful. Thus you can reduce the amount of wasted food and reduce your spending – SAVINGS!
Do you pay attention to the expiration date when buying food? There are many similar products on the shelves, but they all have different expiration dates. For example, two yogurts of the same brand – made by the same manufacturer – can have different expiration dates, by as much as a few days. It’s good idea to pay attention to the expiration dates, so you buy products that have a longer expiration date.
The expiration date is printed on most food product we buy. The date printed on the packaging shows the date by which the food product can be sold and the date by which it retains its optimal quality.
What about at home, once you open the packaging (yogurt, milk, juice, etc.) but don’t use it up – do you remember when you’ve opened a product and stored it in the refrigerator? Do you know how long after you can safely consume it?
A common problem is that we do not remember exactly when we opened the packaging (juice, milk, curd, cheese, etc.), especially if someone else opened it and put it back in the refrigerator. Sometimes we don’t even remember when we ourselves opened the packaging and put the food back into the refrigerator. If not sooner than when we want to once again consume the food or drink, we have to taste the product (milk, juice, etc.) to check if it had spoiled or if mold had developed on it. Of course, such products are immediately thrown away. However, sometimes we actually consume spoiled food and have subsequent health-related consequence, but are not even aware why we feed ill or bloated, or are throwing up.
